Subscription Scheme

Subscription Scheme

why do i need to pay for an ambulance?

The Guernsey Ambulance & Rescue Service is a ‘user pays’ organisation which generates funds through this Subscription Scheme as well as charging for ambulance services and hiring or selling medical equipment. Additional funding is provided in the form of a grant from the States of Guernsey and from public donations.

The ambulance service is a charitable company; all funds go back into the provision of community services, to purchase equipment, train personnel and keep ambulances on the road.

It is worth noting that the grant from the States of Guernsey covers approximately 75% of the costs of providing the Island’s ambulance services, which are specified in a Service Level Agreement with Guernsey’s Health and Social Services Department.

The provision of paramedics, rescue teams and the marine ambulance, are funded solely from donations and bequests to the Service. The grant from the States of Guernsey cannot be used to fund these additional services.

What is the ambulance subscription scheme?

An invitation to support the Ambulance & Rescue Service, in exchange for which you will not be charged if you need an ambulance response, treatment or transfer during the subscription period.

How do I subscribe?

Fill in your details on this form. Return it to the Ambulance Station along with your payment details. You can now do this by direct debit. Your receipt will be posted back to you - please allow 3 weeks.

Benefits of membership

Members of the scheme are not charged should they need:

  • a response by the ambulance service
  • assessment, diagnosis or treatment by ambulance staff
  • transfer by ambulance vehicle in Guernsey in the event of an injury, serious illness, maternity or other serious medical condition; or under the direct instructions of a Health Care Professional where they are unfit to travel by any other means for treatment.

Where patients do not meet the conditions they will be subject to normal charges for ambulance transfers regardless of their membership of the Scheme

What if I don't join?

A specialist emergency ambulance responding to an emergency call will incur a charge of up to £250 for each response. A non-emergency transfer by ambulance booked in advance by a Health Care Professional will incur a charge of up to £86, other charges will be applied for specialist services (e.g. paramedic treatment). Members of the Ambulance Subscription Scheme are not charged, regardless of the number of emergency responses, diagnosis, treatment or transfers that they need.

Restrictions

There is no limit to the number of ambulance responses, and no age limit for subscribers. However, subscribers cannot order an ambulance just because they are members. The fact that someone needs to go for medical treatment to a hospital or other centre does not necessarily mean they require an ambulance vehicle, and except for emergencies we only respond when a Health Care Professional decides that a transfer is necessary for medical treatment and that the patients condition makes them unfit to travel by other means – calls must come from a Health Care Professional or someone acting on their behalf.
